This very interesting item belongs to my mom. In the early 1900s, my mother's aunt lived across the street from the Palmerton Hospital in Palmerton, PA and she ran a boarding house for nursing students. This container was among her aunt's things and it eventually made its way to my 95 year old mother and she is willing to sell it.  We believe her aunt (or a nursing student) likely used this container to store things, because it is heavy and sturdy. It originally held 25 lbs of talc which was shipped to the hospital.
This heavy cardboard container has the MALLINCKRODT CHEMICAL WORKS logo on the front and around the paper tape that originally sealed the bin. It has the Palmerton, PA Hospital destination stamped on the top. It has rows of metal staples around the perimeter of the lid and base. I tried to capture these things in the photos.
