VICTORIAN POTTERY BROWNFIELD TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER * RARE PATTERN *DATED MAY 1881

Description

Rare survivor!  From May 1881.
Antique Victorian toothbrush holder. With water drain hole in front.
This piece was made by Brownfield pottery company < 1837- late 1890's>.
I looked through many of Brownfield's patterns and could not find this one anywhere, so I am saying
rare
.
That being said the piece has some crazing on the glaze. No chips or cracks.
The piece reads on the bottom: Brownfield 5/81 < which is the date code >.
#'s 3 & 5870.  And the word IVORY.
The piece measures: 5 1/4'' tall X 2 3/4'' wide.
I found the following on the web about Brownfield potters:
Brownfield potters were manufacturers of
earthenware
&
porcelain
(porcelain introduced in 1871) at
Cobridge

Stoke-on-Trent
They were a very successful manufacturer, employing about 500 people.
From 1836 William Brownfield worked the
Cobridge Works
with other potters, then on his own from 1850 - 1871
when he was joined by his oldest son William Etches Brownfield.
William Brownfield (the founder of the company) died in 1873 - the name Brownfield & Son/s was continued on.
Around 1876 one of other sons joined the business.
In 1892, the Brownfield's Guild Pottery Society was formed to continue the former William Brownfield's concern, the company closed at the end of the 1890's.
